Chapter Twenty
âSomeone looks happy,â Daisy said as she joined Anna at their regular table in the Angel.
âDo I?â Anna could barely keep the smile off her face. She felt like sheâd been grinning like a fool since the night of the exhibition.
âIâve seen that look before,â Daisy said darkly. âAnd this time you canât deny it.â
âDeny what?â Anna took a sip of her wine.
âYou know what. You and Daniel.â
âMaybe.â Annaâs smile widened even further.
Daisy groaned. âWhat is it with you and your bosses? Havenât you learned anything from last time?â
âThis time itâs different.â
âHow is it different? Heâs still your boss.â
âTechnically, yes, but things are changing.â
âHow so?â
Judging by the frown on Daisyâs face, Anna knew that sheâd take some convincing. âIâm still working for Daniel, but heâs setting up a new project in Cheshire, so heâs going to be spending more time up there. Which will give me time to concentrate on my own photography.â
âSo itâs going to be a long-distance relationship? Howâs that going to work?â
âIt doesnât have to be long-distance, not initially anyway.â
âHow come?â
âIâm thinking that when Daniel goes up to Cheshire, I can go with him, at least some of the time.â
Daisy had been about to take a sip of her wine but she banged her glass back on the table, causing some of the wine to spill over the top. âAnd how exactly does that further your own career? This is just typical of you, going in all guns blazing.â
âIâm not,â Anna protested. âAnd I have thought this through, Iâm just not explaining it very well.â
âGo on then,â Daisy said, her face still sceptical.
âOkay, well, the exhibition was a huge success, and Charlotte has done a brilliant job on my PR. So Iâve got to work hard on getting my next exhibition together while people still remember my name.â
âAnd?â
âAnd, when I first went to Cheshire with Daniel I took some pictures in Chester. Itâs a fascinating city, so Iâm going to contrast the buildings in that landscape to those here.â
âAnd conveniently your work will take you to where he is when heâs there.â
âYes.â Anna beamed. âItâs brilliant, isnât it?â
âJust be careful.â
Anna frowned. âWhat do you mean?â Sheâd hoped her best friend would be happy for her, not critical of her.
âJust that youâre pinning all your hopes on one person, and he does have a bit of a reputation, you said so yourself.â
âHe was very lonely for a long time after his wife left, but heâs not been like that recently.â
âSince he met you, you mean?â
Anna could clearly hear the sarcasm in Daisyâs voice. She chose to ignore it, smiling instead. âMaybe. And he absolutely adores his son. Surely thatâs a good reflection on his character?â
âMaybe, but doesnât that mean his son will always come first?â
âThatâs as it should be.â
âWhat about his ex-wife? Will she always come first?â
âNo, of course she wonât. Thereâs a reason why sheâs his ex, you know?â
âOkay, have it your way.â Daisy sighed.
âHonestly, Daise, I thought youâd be pleased for me.â
âI am. I just donât want you to get hurt, thatâs all.
